Hive is a project management platform that promotes productivity by integrating over 1,000 tools like Slack, Google Apps, and Salesforce into a single dashboard.
As their first designer, I improved the platform’s UX/UI design experience for a diverse user base by implementing new features, revamping existing technologies, and adapting for mobile.

Problem Solving
With the ever-growing demographic of Hive’s user base, we had the challenge of scaling a design that fits the diverse needs of its users. Through Critical User Journeys, we set out to deeply understand our users’ motivations to inform our design strategy. We proposed novel layouts and strategic solutions to aid usability and navigation.
Additionally, we drove awareness of key features, elevating entry points to new users, decreasing time-to-find desired features, and improving the experience of the platform’s complex and rich technologies.
Goals
Make it easier for users to discover new technologies and streamline their workflow
Design & deliver a UX that scales to meet users’ goals and needs while prioritizing features that drive business success
Conduct user research to gather data on user behavior, preferences, and pain points through interviews, surveys, usability testing, and analytics
Role
Media Designer
Clarifying the “Approvals” feature
The Approvals Feature is a technology on the platform that is a central location for all files, client work, approvals, and feedback. It’s a feature that allows users to upload any files for approvals across internal & external members of the system.
However, the feature had much room for improvement - as critical user needs weren’t being addressed and parent/child hierarchies were confusing. To address this, I did a design critique of the existing design and conducted user research to further understand users’ motivations and pain points. The solution entailed reducing superfluous terminology (Rounds vs Stages), differentiating hierarchy with colors, and creating stackable designs to demonstrate clear connections to the parent contents.
By proposing new UX solutions and developing key visual layouts, the team received top marks from 88% of users and garnered outstanding internal and external feedback. Users found the new design “clean, easy on the eyes, and information-focused.”
Refining of features for new users
The redesign of numerous features incorporated frequent check-ins to ensure the UX strategy and engineering & development constraints were adding to Hive’s ultimate goals for growth. Amongst the fastest deployments were the tooltips that were created to provide an introduction to the platform, navigating users through key features of the system for better content digestibility. Additionally, we designed a more engaging mobile introduction for our mobile users.
